Jo Davidson Blog: Are your money beliefs keeping you broke?

People regularly reach out to me to say they don’t think I should put so much content out about making money.

I guess it’s the Britishness in us, because whether I’m talking about almost losing my home, or talking about bringing in thousands of pounds of business in a single day, it never ceases to upset people that I’m so open about my financial escapades.

It must be that life-long conditioning we’ve all been exposed to that tells us that it’s just not good manners to talk about money.Perhaps it’s the years of having employers telling us not to discuss our salaries with our co-workers (in case someone discovers they’re being underpaid). And of course, weren’t we all brought up being told that money is the root of all evil? That rich people were corrupt bastards who took from the poor to line their pockets? And, of course there’s that discomfort when it comes to selling yourself. That eeky feeling that sales is for slimy sleazeballs pushing stuff that nobody wants to buy. And what about the belief, that if you’re doing what you love, and really helping people, then it shouldn’t be about making money?

Well, I’m afraid I disagree.

So I wanted to share a few secrets with you. These are my top 18 beliefs about making money, that support my business growth.

Have a read and let me know what you think.

  1. Money doesn’t buy happiness. If you are miserable without money; trust me, you’ll be miserable with it.
  2. A business that doesn’t make money isn’t a business; it’s a hobby.
  3. A business that doesn’t make MORE THAN ENOUGH money isn’t a business; it’s a job.
  4. If you’re not making plenty of money then chances are, you’re not helping many people at all.
  5. If you’re not making plenty of money then it’s unlikely that you’re loving your work (or that you’ll love it for much longer).
  6. Being constantly short of money detracts from your ability to provide an incredible service for your clients, because you are too busy being desperate for money.
  7. That constant feeling of NOT having enough money bleeds out into your marketing messages and your sales conversations and actually repels potential clients, causing an ever expanding black hole of poverty.
  8. “I can’t afford it” is a limiting belief; a lie you tell yourself to justify the fact that you don’t want to spend your money on something, or that you are AFRAID to spend your money in a certain way.
  9. You can ALWAYS get more money.
  10. Credit is not a scary monster and can be a useful tool when used purposefully.
  11. Other people DO NOT need to suffer in order for you to make lots of money.
  12. Whether people INVEST their money with you, or SPEND their money on shoes, dinners and beach holidays is irrelevant. They will USE their money one way or another.
  13. Selling is helping. If someone has a problem that you can solve, then you OWE IT TO THEM to offer your solution, and help them to overcome their fears of investing.
  14. Being broke is not virtuous. Struggle is not glamourous.
  15. Having little money makes it very difficult to help yourself and makes it near impossible to help others.
  16. Earning MORE THAN ENOUGH money is one of the many rewards you receive as a result of making a massive contribution in the world; the more people you can help, and the better you can help them, the more money you will receive.
  17. Making lots of money in your business does not mean that you can’t help the people without money. The more money you have, the more able you are to give your time away with free content that nurtures your audience and supports those that still believe they “can’t afford it”.
  18. If you have more money than you know what to do with; give to children who need life-saving operations, set up a charitable foundation to support something you’re passionate about, sponsor a child in a third world country, or donate to a donkey sanctuary.

You see, because I live by these beliefs I’m able to feel completely comfortable about making money (and talking about it). I’m not rich, by any stretch of the imagination, but I will be; and I’m not ashamed to say that I am delighted about that. Having sales conversations is easy for me too. I don’t worry about where people are going to find the money to work with me, because I know that there is always more money if they decide that they want it enough. And, because I’m not worrying about where the next pay-check is coming from, the support I provide is second-to-none, and completely focused on my client’s growth and results.

So, ask yourself, what kind of results could you achieve if you adopted these powerful beliefs?
